Preparing for a Disaster

  1. Register for SMCAlert: Receive text and emails to stay informed from the San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services.
  2. Prepare a Evacuation Plan - Set a meet up location 
    • Select a few of your most important individuals
    • Pick an out of state contact if you can't reach others in your local area
    • Agree on a place to meet (park, landmark)
  3. Prepare Emergency Supplies: Prepare to be self-reliant for 72 hours.
    • Water: 1 gallon per person per day
    • First Aid Kit
    • Flashlight and batteries
    • Fire Extinguisher
    • Manual can opener
    • non perishable food
  4. Take a free preparedness class and get more involved:
  5. Learn how to Shut off gas Disable Utilities:
    • If you smell natural gas, see downed power lines, or suspect another power-related emergency situation, call 9-1-1 and then call PG&E at 800-743-5000. 
    • Never touch a downed power line or any electrical equipment.

During a Disaster 

  1. Be ready to evacuate if directed by emergency personnel.
