Solid Waste (Recycling, Compost, and Garbage)
The City of Half Moon Bay has a 10-year Franchise Agreement with Republic Services, Inc. to provide recycling, compost and garbage collection services. Click the carts below to see what's accepted in your curbside program and explore the supplemental services to learn how to properly get rid of special items, like paints, cleaners, electronics, batteries, and more!

Residential Customers
Residential customers are eligible for two, bulky goods pick-ups per calendar year. Please consider donating items that can be reused before disposing them.
Accepted items include:
- Garbage - Up to three cubic yards (or the equivalent of 18, 32-gallon-sized garbage bags) of bagged, boxed or bundled garbage, clothing, yard trimmings and other items.
- Bulky Item - Up to two large items not exceeding 200 pounds each or 3 feet by 6 feet, including appliances, mattresses or electronics. Tree trunks or branches must not exceed 2 feet in diameter and 4 feet in length.

Multi-Family Dwellings/Apartment Complexes
Multi-Family Dwellings (MFD) are eligible for two, bulky good pick-ups per calendar year. Events must be arranged by property management for the entire complex and have a maximum capacity of 0.5 cubic yards of bulky waste per unit (e.g. MFDs with 6 units can get a total of 3 cubic yards collected twice per year).
Eligible waste includes bagged, boxed or bundled garbage, clothing, yard trimmings and other items. Please consider donating items that can be reused before disposing them.

Republic Services offers curbside motor oil and oil filter recycling as part of their residential curbside collection program. Follow the steps below to participate in this program.
- Oil Filters - Place oil filters in a clear, sealed zip-type plastic bag.
- Motor Oil - Pour motor oil into a one-gallon, clear plastic jug with a screw-top cap. Label jugs "Motor Oil." Service is limited to two, one-gallon jugs per pick-up.
- Place the jug(s) and bag(s) on the ground next to your blue Recycle Cart on your regularly scheduled pick-up day.
Available for Residential and Multi-Family/Apartment Customers ONLY!
Residential customers (including those living in multi-family dwellings and apartments) can recycling their e-waste at Ox Mountain Landfill, 12310 San Mateo Road, year-round for no additional cost. Customers are limited to two large e-waste items per vehicle and must bring a copy of their current Republic Services invoice and government-issued ID.
The City also hosts two Community Recycling Events annually, which includes a e-waste recycling for residential and multi-family/apartment customers. One event is typically held in the spring (Earth Day) and the other in the fall.
Accepted items include TVs, monitors, printers, computers, cables, lamps, cell phones, DVD players, etc.
Items not accepted include commercial e-waste or household appliances like fans, floor heaters, smoke detectors, vacuum cleaners, cooktops, batteries, or small or large appliances.

Republic Services offers curbside battery recycling as part of their residential curbside collection program. Follow the steps below to participate in this program and properly dispose of your household batteries.
- Wrap button-type batteries individually with clear tape.
- Place these batteries and other acceptable items in a clear, sealed zip-type plastic bag.
- Put your black Garbage Cart at the curb for pick-up on your regularly scheduled collection day.
- Place the plastic bag with batteries ON TOP of the lid of your black, Garbage Cart.
Available for Residential and Multi-Family/Apartment Customers Only
The City hosts two Community Recycling Events annually, which includes free, on-site paper shredding for residential and multi-family/apartment customers. One event is typically held in the spring (Earth Day) and the other in the fall.
During these events, participants can bring up to five bankers boxes of paper to shred per household. Services are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis until the shred truck has reached maximum capacity.

Available for Residential and Multi-Family/Apartment Customers Only
The City hosts two Community Recycling Events annually, which includes a compost giveaway for residential and multi-family/apartment customers. One event is typically held in the spring (Earth Day) and the other in the fall.
During these events, compost is available on a first-come, first-serve basis and participants must bring their own shovels and containers. Households are limited to 0.5 cubic yard of compost per event (roughly the size of your 96-gallon compost cart).
