WINNERS ANNOUNCED! - 2022 High School Earth Day Essay Contest

2

Congratulations to our 2022 Earth Day Scholarship recipient, Ona Weinert!

Ona submitted an essay responding to this year's prompt, “What is California doing to reduce its short-lived climate pollutants and why is it important to me and my community?” Ona wrote about the impacts of Senate Bill 1383 and its goals to reduce organic waste disposal by 75% by 2025, with the ultimate goal of reversing harmful climate change impacts. Ona noted how climate change was already visible in Half Moon Bay with the increased number of wildfires and decreased air quality, and spoke to how the law would protect the environment and Half Moon Bay community.

Ona is the co-president of the Environment Club at Half Moon Bay High and has actively worked on improving the school’s waste sorting program. Most recently, they spearheaded efforts to establish three-stream sorting stations across the campus with custom sorting signs in efforts to increase the school’s recycling efforts. Ona will be attending CalPoly in the fall, majoring in environmental earth and soil sciences. Congratulations, Ona!

Thank you to everyone that participated in the contest this year! We hope you will consider participating again next year if you are an incoming high school senior. Bookmark this page or subscribe to our eNews to be notified when our next scholarship cycle is released (est. spring 2023).
