[ARCHIVED] The New Half Moon Bay Library

Initial work at the site of the new library began on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 with traffic control and other construction staging activity. See "Latest Update" below for periodic construction updates.

Shoreline Station

During construction, library services are provided at a temporary location at Shoreline Station - 225 S Cabrillo Highway, Suite 104B, Half Moon Bay.

The temporary location is open seven days a week:
 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday: 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.
 Thursday: 1 - 8 p.m.
 Friday: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
 Saturday: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
 Sun: 1 - 5 p.m.
 Latest Update
 April 11, 2017
 The concrete pour for the new Library’s foundation is scheduled to take place on April 14. Up to 32 concrete trucks will be coming and going to and from construction site, at about 15 minute intervals. This pour is for the "spread footings" which will support the new Library’s walls. Another concrete pour for the slab foundation will take place in the coming weeks.

 Library construction web cam goes live! Visit this link to view live video, images, and time lapse video as construction continues. Through the month of February, survey work and the layout of the foundation, underground utilities, drill piers, and de-watering of the site will continue. In March, work will include layout of the foundation and pad, underground building utilities, water, sewer, and electrical systems, layout and excavate footings and elevator pit.

 The building will be demolished and the debris hauled away.
 July 29, 2016
 A festive groundbreaking event took place on July 29 to mark the start of construction of the new library. The asbestos-containing materials have been removed from the building, and PG&E has disconnected gas and power, and remove all of their existing meters, transformers, and cables. Walkway/sidewalk diversions are being set up along Purissima Street at the construction site fence, and soon the contractor will be removing the sidewalks, curbs, and gutters along both Purissima and Correas.

 There will be a temporary Library will open at Shoreline Station on July 5, which will be in operation until the new Library opens in 2018.
 April 1, 2016
 The more fully developed design was presented to community members at the March 29 meeting. See the presentation slides (PDF). The presentation included new computer-generated renderings of the exterior and the interior of the new Library, as well as samples of the proposed exterior materials, and detailed plans and images of the landscape design. The team responded to questions on issues including after hours use of the community room, durability of the exterior materials, views from neighboring residences, and Library amenities. It was noted that Library services will move to their new temporary quarters at Shoreline Station in late June.

 A community information meeting to discuss the progress of the design is scheduled for March 29 at the Ted Adcock Community Center, 6:30 - 8 p.m.
 February, 2016
 The Half Moon Bay Planning Commission held a preliminary design review session on January 12 of this year, at which preliminary graphics were presented. Although subject to some change as final design progresses, the graphics represent the overall direction of the look and layout for the new Library.

 December 2, 2015
 At its meeting of December 1, the Half Moon Bay City Council unanimously authorized the design team to proceed with the new Library project, based on a revised program area of 22,000 square feet, and the conceptual design which was presented at that meeting.

November 22, 2015

 At the November 19 workshop, the community was presented with three alternative designs for the new library building, for discussion on the topics of building "massing," character, and landscaping. This discussion built upon the topics raised during the previous community meetings and in the survey responses.

 October 5, 2015

 Nearly 150 people attended and participated in the first four Community Workshops during September, providing a great deal of input into the desired design of the new library. View the presentation slides from the First Four Workshops (PDF) .

 The fifth workshop, held on September 29, drew over 80 people, and was designed to bring together the input, take community participants through the process of reviewing several site plan options derived from the earlier meetings, and generate discussion about what they feel are the positives and negatives of each option. These slides include a summary of "what we heard from you" about the various aspects of the library design, and three site plan options.

 A community survey to gather further input is being mailed out the week of October 5 to all residents of Half Moon Bay and the region served by this library (responses are due by October 26th).

 August 20, 2015

 The City Council awarded a contract to Noll and Tam Architects and Planners, for architectural and related design services. This came after the top five candidate firms made presentations to a working group tasked with making a recommendation as to the preferred firm. That working group consisted of the City Manager, Deputy County Manager, Library Director, two members of the Board of Supervisors (who also serve as the chair and vice chair of the Library JPA), two City Council members (appointed by Mayor Fraser), two residents of Half Moon Bay (appointed by Mayor Fraser), and two residents of unincorporated Coastside (one from north of Half Moon Bay and one from south of Half Moon Bay. appointed by Supervisor Horsley). The group reached a unanimous consensus as to the top firm.

 July 9, 2015

 The City received 18 responses to the Request for Qualifications/Proposals for architectural and related design services for the new library. Interviews will be conducted in the near future with the selected top five candidate firms.

 May 27, 2015

 The City Council approved a contract with Griffin Structures, Inc. to be the project/construction manager for the new library; the City has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for architectural and design related services and responses are due to the City on June 10, 2015.

 February 3, 2015

 The City Council approved the funding mechanism for the new library, issuing $8 million in lease/revenue bonds and earmarking $3 million in other funds.


 The City is grateful for the partnership of San Mateo County, which is providing half the funding of the project’s estimated $23 million construction costs; the County Library Joint Powers Authority which is committing over $1 million for furnishings and equipment; the San Mateo County Library System which will operate the library; and the Friends of the Half Moon Bay Library, which is engaging in a fundraising campaign to help offset the City’s construction costs (not to mention the other great support services provided by the Friends).
